Gold Panning

Gold Panning

Folks still come to Coloma from all over the world with gold fever in search of the shiny yellow flakes. If your’re real lucky you might even find a small nugget. You can become an expert miner once you learn how to pan for gold by taking a 45 minute lesson. Young and old alike stand at the gold panning troughs at Marshall Gold Discovery SHP swirling the dirt around in the pan and sure enough you hear someone call out Eureka!

Lessons begin every hour on the hour. Fee: $7 per person.

Junior Ranger Program

The Junior Ranger program is a great way for young visitors to explore and learn all about Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and become a Jr. Ranger at the same time. Just stop at the Visitor Center where you can pick up your copy of the Jr. Ranger Activity Book. Learn about the Gold Rush that changed our state, our nation, and the world! Once you’ve completed the program, you can earn your Jr. Ranger Patch. (Program booklet is free – patch is $2)

Living in 1849

Living History

Join us the 2nd Saturday of each month for Living History Day where historical re-enactors dressed in period attire demonstrate many aspects of pioneer life during the gold rush. You will find folks cooking dinner for the miners in dutch ovens, butter being churned, tin punching, candle dipping, mountain men, a circuit preacher, women sewing, spinning and weaving and so much more. There are many hands – on activities for kids to enjoy! Living History Day takes place the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10:00 – 3:00 (Canceled if weather is extremely hot or cold)
